Validating Motors, Inverters, and Electric Powertrain using eDrive and Opal RT Power Hardware in the Loop

One of the challenges while developing electric powertrains is how to validate and optimize components/Unit Under Tests (UUT). Development requires time consuming testing and significant capital investment for test stands. Power Hardware in the Loop (PHIL) systems can be an efficient way to validate motors and inverters with precision, saving cost at the later stages of the development cycle (certification for example). In a PHIL test, a real UUT is interreacting with one or more simulated components via real power flow. Anything (Motors, Grid, Inverters) can be simulated on a simulator, which controls the power amplifier that interfaces with the UUT. Once this validation is complete the UUT can then be moved to the full powertrain testbench (with no simulation).

This session will show how HBK’s eDrive system and Opal RT’s real time simulators can be used in a PHIL system to emulate motors effectively for the study of motor control methods – the motor and it’s control are simulated on an OPAL-RT simulator controlling the power amplifiers that interface with the grid. HBK’s eDrive system is used as the acquisition tool that is relied on in the PHIL system, and the real system with the real motor and dyno.
